The St John Passion is written for an ensemble of soloists, SATB choir, and
orchestra. In present day performances the part of Jesus is given to one bass
soloist, Pilate and the bass arias to another. Some tenors sing the Evangelist -
and the arias. The smaller parts (Peter, Maid, Servant) are sometimes performed
by choir members.
This training aid set comprises all the sections in Bach's St. John Passion (Passionmusik
nach dem Evangelisten Johannes). Both choir and solo parts are provided. The
choir aids have the vocal part highlighted on piano, and the solo's are
highlighted on a wind instrument. There are also recordings that have little or
no help, so as to develop confidence further.
There are many ways this work can be delivered, some holding on to the
fermatas in the chorales others not. We have created our training recordings
modeled on Karl Richter's recording for Deutsche Grammophon, and to a lesser
extent that of The Scholars Baroque Ensemble recording by Naxos
